🔫 Gun Deaths & Youth Fatalities
Gun deaths in Texas rose significantly from approximately 2,848 in 2014 (pre-Abbott) to about 4,630 by 2022, marking a 63% increase since he took office in 2015, which far exceeds population growth. Among children under 18, the firearm fatality rate more than doubled—from 54 deaths in 2015 to 146 in 2020—making Texas the nation’s deadliest state for child gun deaths.
👶 Maternal & Infant Mortality
Since the implementation of the 2021 abortion ban, maternal mortality in Texas has surged by 56%, compared to an 11% increase nationwide. Additionally, infant mortality rose by 11.5% in 2022. Healthcare experts attribute much of this rise to restricted reproductive access and diminished care options.
🌊 Disasters & Other Causes
The catastrophic 2025 Hill Country floods resulted in at least 109 confirmed deaths, with over 160 individuals reported missing—surpassing fatalities from Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Critics have highlighted failures in flood preparedness and emergency response coordination. Meanwhile, fentanyl-related overdose deaths have soared over the past five years; although officials report a modest recent decrease of approximately 20%, the overall toll exceeded 7,000 lives lost from 2019 to mid-2024.
🦠 COVID‑19 Fatalities
By November 2024, Texas had reported around 93,390 COVID-19 fatalities, one of the highest totals in the U.S. Critics have pointed to delayed action, undercounted statistics, and rapid reopening policies as major contributors to this excess mortality.
Let him know that you think this special session is BS, especially considering the alarming rates of COVID-19 fatalities, the ongoing issue of gun deaths, and the rising maternal mortality rates.
